Big Ticket, Big Value

Today, the 2011 Scotties Tournament of Hearts announced its Big Ticket will go on sale February 1, 2010.

Over the past several decades, dedicated curling fans have recognized the best way to experience all 21 draws of competition - over the course of nine amazing days – is the Big Ticket package. It gives you the chance to choose the best seat in the house for every single draw.

“The Big Ticket is definitely the best way to see the big picture at the Scotties,” said Kim Dolan, Chair of the host committee for the 2011 Scotties Tournament of Hearts in Charlottetown, February 19 – 27.

“Our fans have always been strong supporters of championship curling and we’re confident the Big Ticket will generate tremendous interest among fans.”

The 2011 Scotties marks the 30th anniversary of the event under the sponsorship of Kruger Products Limited. It’s the third time Prince Edward Island has hosted the women’s national championship – the last time in Charlottetown was 1999.

The Big Ticket package goes on sale February 1 at 10:00 am and can be purchased online at seasonofchampions.ca or by phoning 902.629.6625, or in person at the Civic Centre Box Office.

The 2011 Scotties Tournament of Hearts will be played in the Charlottetown Civic Centre featuring 12 women’s teams representing the 11 provinces and territories, as well as the defending Scotties champions competing as Team Canada.

Labatt Charlabel

The Labatt Charlabel is an annual fun mixed spiel and will run February 26 and 27. The entry fee is $120 per team and includes a minimum of 3 six-end games, beer, food, entertainment and pizes! The Charlottetown Curling Club has a few copies of the John Morris book, Fit To Curl, for sale.

John Morris plays third for Kevin Martin and a number of championships to his name including two world titles, two world junior championships, two Briers and six Grand Slams. He has a degree in Kinesiology and Physical Education from Wilfrid Laurier and is a certified Personal Training Specialist & Wellness Specialist.

The book focuses on a sport-specific approach to training for curling and staying fit. It provides advice on fitness from a basic level through to advanced.

Nova Scotia wins Canadian Mixed

BURLINGTON, November 21, 2009...
Nova Scotia, skipped by Mark Dacey of Halifax, won the 2010 Canadian Mixed Curling Championship Saturday at the Burlington Golf and Country Club, defeating Ontario, 7-5 in the final.

After starting out undefeated, Kyle Stevenson finished tied for 5th with a 5-6 record for the week.

Scotties Tournament of Hearts 2011

It was announced on Friday in Charlottetown that the Scotties Tournament of Hearts would return to PEI's capital city for the third time in the history of the Canadian women's curling championship. The event will be played in the Charlottetown Civic Centre from February 19-27 2011, with draws telecast on TSN. On hand to make the announcement were Greg Stremlaw, CEO of the Canadian Curling Association (CCA), Warren Hansen, CCA Director of Event Operations and Media, Wayne Long, Events Development Officer for the City of Charlottetown, and Kim Dolan, local host committee chair.

In addition to this announcement, Nancy Marcus, Corporate Vice President of Consumer Marketing for Kruger International was in attendance to announce that Kruger, the leading tissue manufacturer in Canada, will be continuing its unprecedented 29 year sponsorship of women's curling, with a new multi-year agreement.

Our club will benefit from this announcement, as will all clubs on the Island, and we will be looking for volunteers for almost every aspect of the event. If you are interested in being involved please see Rob at the club. Let's show Canada what PEI hospitality is all about!

Kyle Stevenson Undefeated at Canadian Mixed

The Kyle Stevenson rink from the Charlottetown Curling Club have won their first two games at the Canadian Mixed Curling Championships, being played at the Burlington Ontario Golf and Country Club. On Sunday morning they followed up their 8-5 Saturday win over Newfoundland and Labrador’s Matt Blandford foursome with another 8-5 victory, this time over the Mark Dacey rink from Halifax. Dacey was ahead 4-2 after six ends, but Stevenson took the lead with a triple in the seventh, and recorded another three in the ninth in a game which featured a lot of rocks in play and some up-weight hits from Stevenson.

The PEI team, which includes third Donna Butler, second Doug MacGregor, and lead Tricia Affleck play the final Atlantic Canadian team, New Brunswick’s Mary Jane McGuire rink, at 7 pm AT. McGuire is the only other team at 2-0.

On Monday, PEI plays Northern Ontario, and Ontario.

Gallant & Likely Rinks Win Cash

Shawn Adams rink wins Mayflower spiel; Gallant, Likely rinks take home $1000

The Molson Mayflower Cashspiel, wrapped up this afternoon at the Mayflower Curling Club in Halifax, with Shawn Adams from the host club beating Mark Kehoe of Windsor 7-4 in the final. The Adams foursome, which includes Paul Flemming, Jeff Hopkins, and Kelly Mittelstadt, goes home with $2500, with $1500 going to the runner-up Kehoe squad.

PEI’s Brett Gallant and John Likely rinks lost out in the quarter-finals, and go home with $1000 each. Gallant lost 7-2 to Kehoe, while Likely was edged out by Adams in a close 3-2 decision.

Adams beat Chad Stevens of Chester 5-3 in the semi-finals, while Kehoe edged Jamie Murphy of the host club 5-4 to advance to the final. The Stevens and Murphy rinks each go home with $1250,
PEI’s Gallant team finished round robin play with a 5-0 win-loss record, while Likely had just one loss. Other members of the Brett Gallant foursome are Adam Casey, Anson Carmody and Alex MacFadyen, while Phil Gorveatt, Mark Butler, and Mike Dillon round out the Likely squad.

The two other PEI teams entered finished out of the money, with Eddie MacKenzie finishing round robin play at 2-3, and Rebecca Jean MacPhee picking up one win against four losses.

24 teams from across the Maritimes took part in this Atlantic Curling Tour event. Next up on the tour is the Labatt/Superstore/Journal Pioneer Cashspiel, November 27-29 at the Silver Fox Curling and Yacht Club in Summerside.

Getting Started

The Club will be hosting a "Getting Started" league for new curlers interested in learning the basics before jumping into a regular league. This instructional league will run for ten Sundays from 1:00 - 3:00pm. Equipment will be supplied for those that need it and the cost is $100 for non-members and free for One-Night, Full and New Curler members. The dates for Getting Started are:

2009 RODD CURLING CLASSIC

TOP MARITIME CURLERS COMPETE IN RODD CLASSIC

Curling fans are in for a treat this coming weekend. This year's Rodd
Curling Classic will feature World and Canadian Champions as well as
some of the top money winners in the Maritimes.

PEI's own Canadian Junior Men's Champ, Brett Gallant, and former World
Junior Champion, Suzanne Birt, will be among 18 men's teams and 12
women's teams competing for some big cash prizes. Top prize for the
men will be $5,000 while the women are shooting for a top prize of
$3,100.

There will be teams in from Nova Scotia and New Brunswick. Shawn
Adams, who has already won a cash bonspiel this season and has
represented his province at the Brier will be in from Halifax. In both
the men's and women's events there are numerous provincial champions
from all three Maritime provinces.

John Likely is President of the Charlottetown Curling Club and one of
the competitors. He thinks this will be a tough field. "We have the
top competitive curlers here this year and people who come to watch
are going to see some great shots."

The Rodd Curling Classic kicks off on Thursday afternoon at 1:00 PM at
the Charlottetown Curling Club. Round robin play runs through Thursday
evening, all day Friday and Saturday. Playoffs will go Sunday. There
is no admission charge.

Rock Sanding

Rodd Curling Classic

The Rodd Curling Classic gets underway this week with some of the best teams in the Maritimes playing for over $20,000. The action begins with the first draw at 1:00 on Thursday and continues all weekend with the finals scheduled for 2:00 on Sunday. Please note that all leagues including Afternoon Seniors, Juniors, Ladies Single Entry and Men's Single Entry are cancelled for Thursday November 5 for this event. Spectators are always welcome and the kitchen will be open all weekend for your convenience.

A Haunted Spiel

Its that time of season again where our thoughts turn to ghouls and haunted places. The Charlottetown Curling Club is not without its share of spooky occurances. The staff have all experienced strange sounds and objects disappearing and reappearing elsewhere. I myself have followed phantom footsteps from the dance hall to the basement, never finding a soul in the empty and locked building. You can experience some scares and fun at the club on Friday October 30th at the Halloween Fun Spiel. Anyone can join in the fun and just $10 gets you dinner and curling starting at 6:00. And don't forget to dress up... there will be bar tabs up for grabs for the best dressed curlers on the ice. See you there!

Swine Flu Precautions

In order to combat seasonal flu including the H1N1virus the curling club will be initiaing sevaral precautionary measures. You will notice alcohol hand sanitizing pumps all around the club as well as sanitizing wipes both in the lounge and on the ice. The rock handles are wiped down daily but please feel free to do so yourself before the game. Door handles, railings, the bar area, and washrooms are also being cleaned more frequently. You can help stop the spread of flu in the club by coughing into your sleeve, washing your hands and shaking hands before and after the game with your gloves on.

Golf and Curl a Success!

Thanks to all those who participated in our Golf and Curl event on Saturday. We missed the nasty weather and had a beautiful morning, enjoying a comfortable ride to the Belfast Highlands in a new coach and sunshine for the entire golf game. Then it was back for steak and fries... the first meal served out of the new kitchen in the main lounge... and a friendly game out on the ice. If you missed it this year be sure to sign up early for next year's event, on October 16, 2010.

League Play

All league play begins this week including all evening, daytime, and junior leagues. The league schedules will be accessible via the club website within the week, but until then you can follow the league schedules in the Sports Notes in the Guardian or on the league boards in the lobby. Well the ice is in. Thanks to all those who helped out in the gruelling process... Jet Ice is Nice

Without having thrown a rock on the ice yet we can tell that there is something different about the ice. The Jet Ice system we are using this year has already produced some promising results. It is freezing harder and faster than our Culligan water ever did, and feels less greasy underfoot. Having ust put the last flood down I am anxious to see what the rocks will do on the new ice. The ice should be ready by 6:00pm on Tuesday.

LET'S GET SOME NEW CURLERS!

There are at least four hundred people in one Island club who say curling is a great winter sport. They enjoy the game on so many levels. For them, it's social, physical, competitive, and even intellectual, but most of all, it's fun.

Jodi Murphy is a 27 year old teacher from Charlottetown. She started curling at the Charlottetown Club in her early 20's, partly because her dad was curling and partly because she wanted some exercise in the winter.

Jodi says she enjoys the game immensely and this year she has volunteered to organize the Monday Night Team Entry League.

"It's a fun night with a little competition thrown in," says Jodi. "There's a nice mix of experienced curlers with people just starting out in the game, and we are still looking for teams."

Brett Gallant is another curler from the Charlottetown Curling Club who has played at the very top level in the world. Brett and his three team mates were Canadian Junior Champions last year and took Silver at the Worlds.

Brett says, "This is a very exciting time for Island curlers with our club opening up for the new season. It is the perfect time for new curlers to come in, have some fun, and try out the sport."

Brett wants to get more people into the game and he's volunteered to help as an instructor with the beginners.

"We're giving free instruction to people who would like to try the game this winter," Brett says. "You can come out and all you need is warm, loose clothing, clean running shoes and a pair of gloves. We supply the rest: rocks, brooms, ice and some good tips on how to play the game."

The Charlottetown Curling Club has taken another step to opening up the sport. They have enlisted radio station K-ROCK who will have their own curling team and are sponsoring the curling school.

The K-ROCK Curling School will run from October 13th to 15th from 6:00 to 8:00 PM. And again the weekend of October 24th and 25th from 2:00 to 4:00 PM. It is open to adults 19 and over and all you have to do is come out.

Robbie Doherty is former junior curler at the Charlottetown Club. Last year he was working in New Brunswick and represented that province at the Canadian Juniors. Robbie will be running the curling school this year. He says, "There will be a number of championship curlers on hand to help people learn the ins and outs, literally." He adds people will learn how to throw a curling rock, how to sweep and some basic game strategy.

The Anything Goes League starts Monday October 19th with 2 draws at 6:00 and 8:00 PM. If you would like to put your name in you can call David Murphy at 566-4871 or leave a message for Jodi Murphy at the Charlottetown Curling Club 892-7467.

There are other leagues for beginner curlers to join. Tuesday at 6:00 PM it’s the Mixed Single Entry, the perfect place for beginners and experienced curlers alike who want to enoy the social aspect of this great sport a little more. You can join on your own or as a couple, but come on out and have some fun.
The Tuesday Mixed League starts Tuesday October 20th at 6:00 PM. If you would like to put your name in you can call Kay Atkinson at 892-3975 or the Charlottetown Curling Club at 892-7467.

On Thursday evenings there is Women’s Single Entry at 6:00pm and Men’s Single Entry at 8:00. If you are just learning or experienced and looking for a guys' or gals' night out these are the leagues for you.
The Ladies and Mens Single Entry Leagues start Thursday October 21st at 6:00 and 8:00 PM respectively. If you would like to put your name in you can call the Charlottetown Curling Club at 892-7467 for the ladies' league or David Murphy at 566-4871 for the men's league.

Well, we have suffered a slight delay with making the ice, but it was because our new roof was being completed, so it was well worth it. I now expect to be painting the white on Monday or Tuesday at the latest with playable ice on October 13th. If you are interested in helping out or just watching the process come on by the club.

The bar will begin nightly operation on Tuesday, October 13, open from 4:00 to 11:00pm. Our kitchen will begin operation on October 17, open from 4:00 to 9:00pm daily and will also host meals for our bonspiels and Saturday dinner steak specials.

Also, don't forget our Golf and Curl Opener is coming up on October 17th. Please call the club if you are interested.

FREE Curling Clinics

We will again be offering our FREE curling clinics where some of the top curling celebrities on the Island will be available to instruct new curlers. The clinics will run nightly October 13-15 from 6:00 to 8:00pm and on October 24 and 25 from 2:00 to 4:00pm. All adults are welcome to participate and should bring warm clothing, loose pants and a pair of clean shoes that have not been worn outdoors. Brooms and sliders are provided. If you or anyone you know would like to try the sport of curling please drop by the club and learn the basics for FREE! Please call the club at 892-7467 if you have any questions.

Superleague and Competitive League Meetings

This year the Superleague will be split into two different leagues. The Superleague will be a high-stakes league with a league fee of $800 (suggested). This league will run only until mid-February and will include a pay-per-win system as well as playoffs. This league will rotate between 6:00 and 8:00pm.

There will be a meeting to discuss these changes and sign up for the league on Wednesday October 7 at 6:00pm at the club.

The second league will also be a Competitive league, but will have a smaller league fee of $300 (suggested). The league fee will be paid out entirely in a pay-per-win system to discourage frequent game cancellations. This league will run from October to April, split into two round-robin sessions and playoffs.

There will be a meeting to discuss these changes and sign up for this league on Thursday October 8 at 6:00pm at the club.

Rob is anticipating the ice will be ready on October 6th. Curling schools will start the next day and run into the following week.

Jet Ice

This year we will be using the Jet Ice system to purify the water we use to make the ice and pebble. This change will enable us to make the ice in less time at the beginning of the year and will hopefully improve playing later in the year by eliminating more impurities present in the city water we use to make ice.

Ice making starts Thursday September 24th. We're expecting the ice to be in by October 6th.

Construction at the Club

There'll be a few physical changes when curlers return this fall.

The manager's office and VLT area is being renovated so there will be a small downstairs kitchen.

The manager's office will now be behind the bar.

Work is also being done on the roof over the ice shed. Work will start soon on the roof over the main part of the club.
